Field Hockey Positions

There are 11 players in a team. It includes a goal keeper and 10 field players. The 10 field players include forwards, midfielders and defensive players. Each team plays with these 11 players. The positions are further discussed below:

 

Forward Field Hockey:

Forwards is basically an attacking position. Forwards are the players who spend most of their time between the midfield and the opponent’s goal. Forwards include the right wing, centre forward and the left wing. Forward is a very important position in the game of hockey. The main responsibility of the forwards is to convert the opportunities created by the fellow players into goals.

 

Field Hockey Midfielder:

Midfielder position is also a main position on the field of hockey. Midfielder positions include the inner right, centre half and inner left. The main responsibility of the midfielders is to provide support to the attacking players or the forwards. A midfielder must be able to play both defense and offensive. They require great stamina to run the field.

 

Field Hockey Defense:

Defender is a defending position. Defense is the most important position in Field Hockey Positions. Defenders position include the right half, right back, left back and left half. The main responsibility of the defender is to make sure that opposition team can’t create any scoring opportunities. Defender responsibility also includes supporting the goal keeper.

 

Field Hockey Positions Sweeper:

The fourth man in the defending line is known as the sweeper. Sweeper plays close to his goal.

 

Goal Keeper:

Goal keeper is one of the most important Field Hockey Positions in Hockey. He stands in the front of the goal with his full protective equipment. The goal keeper uses his equipment and body to save the goal form the opponents. The goal keeper must have strong reflexes. He also must have the ability to communicate defensive with his team mates to create a strong defense.
